Born in South Korea, Jazz Percussionist Byung Kang started his musical career playing the trumpet at the age of 13. He moved to the United States in 2002 and currently resides in Germantown, Maryland. Byung attended Walter Johnson High School and studied Jazz Percussion with Chris Allen as a freshman. He served as a drummer in the Honors Jazz Ensemble, starting his junior year. Byung was named as an All-Star Musician in the Chantilly High School Jazz Festival in Richmond, Virginia, and won an award for Excellence in Jazz in Walter Johnson High School. Byung has performed in the Kennedy Center with an All-County Jazz Ensemble. He has also performed in various venues around Bethesda, Maryland, with a combo under his leadership comprised of musicians in his high school. Byung is currently attending Peabody Conservatory, studying for his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance under the tutelage of Nasar Abadey.
